Wajub vs Paystack

Paystack collects your payments and pays you out, in four countries and in beta in two more. Wajub picks, for each payment, between your Paystack account and your other providers.

In short

Paystack is a payment service provider (PSP): it collects your payments by card, mobile money or transfer, deducts its fees, then pays the rest into your settlement account, automatically. It serves businesses registered in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and South Africa, with a private beta in Côte d'Ivoire and Egypt. Stripe announced its acquisition in October 2020.8

Wajub is an orchestration layer: it does not collect or hold funds. You connect your own accounts, Paystack included, and Wajub picks the route for each payment. If Paystack is unreachable during a mobile money payment, the payment goes through another connection, with nothing to redo on your side.

Point by point

What it is

Wajub

Payment orchestration layer: one API, several providers behind it. Not a payment institution.

Paystack

Payment service provider: it collects for you.1

Who collects the funds

Wajub

Your providers, on your own accounts, who pay you out under your contract. Wajub does not hold funds.

Paystack

Paystack, which deducts its fees and pays the rest into your settlement account, automatically, on its schedule.24

Countries in Africa

Wajub

23 countries, channel by channel, depending on the connections you enable.

Providers behind one integration

Wajub

Several: 2 on Pay as you go, 6 on Growth, unlimited on Scale.

Paystack

One: Paystack.

If the gateway goes down

Wajub

A mobile money payment that fails moves automatically to the next connection, with nothing to redo on your side. A connection that fails repeatedly is set aside, then takes its place back as soon as it works again. Card payments are the exception: they stay with the provider the card was entered with.

Paystack

The payment depends on Paystack alone. A backup through another provider takes a second contract and your own switching code.

Contract to sign

Wajub

Your contract with each connected provider. In Cameroon, the Wajub rail collects MTN MoMo and Orange Money with no provider contract.

Paystack

A Paystack account: "Starter" without registration, with a collection limit, or "Registered" for a registered business.6

Pricing

Wajub

Subscription from 0 to FCFA 29,900 a month, then usage beyond the included volume. Your providers' fees come on top, under your contracts.

Paystack

Per payment, depending on the country: 1.95% for mobile money in Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire, 1.5% through M-Pesa in Kenya, 1.5% + NGN 100 in Nigeria, capped at NGN 2,000.2

Using Wajub alongside Paystack

  1. Integrate the Wajub API: one call creates the payment, your customer pays on the checkout, a webhook confirms the outcome.

  2. In the Dashboard, connect your Paystack account with your API keys. Your Paystack contract and rates stay the same.

  3. Add a second connection on your main mobile money channels, for example Flutterwave or pawaPay: if Paystack is unreachable during a mobile money payment, Wajub switches to it.

Choose Paystack if

  • Your business is registered in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya or South Africa, and one provider is enough.

  • You are starting without a company: Paystack's "Starter" account collects up to a limit, before registration.

  • You want a provider that collects, holds the funds and pays you out, with subscriptions, invoicing and split payments in one place.

Choose Wajub if

  • You also sell outside Paystack's countries, in Cameroon or Senegal for example: Wajub goes through other providers there, with the same integration.

  • You already collect with Paystack and don't want to lose a sale if that connection becomes unreachable: add a backup route on the same channels, without changing contracts.

  • You want to add or change providers without touching your code.

Give your payments a backup route.
