Wajub vs Stripe

Stripe accepts cards worldwide, but mobile money is missing from its payment methods list. Wajub routes African mobile money and can keep your Stripe account for cards.

In short

Stripe is a global payments platform: cards, wallets, transfers and subscriptions, for businesses in the countries where it opens accounts. In Africa, its availability page lists only Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa, as "extended network", with links to Paystack, whose acquisition Stripe announced in 2020.18

Wajub is an orchestration layer: it does not collect funds itself. For mobile money, it goes through your accounts with African providers, or through the Wajub rail in Cameroon; for cards, it can go through your Stripe account.

Point by point

What it is

Wajub

Payment orchestration layer: one API, several providers behind it. Not a payment institution.

Stripe

Payments platform: it collects for you.1

If the gateway goes down

Wajub

A mobile money payment that fails moves automatically to the next connection, with nothing to redo on your side. A connection that fails repeatedly is set aside, then takes its place back as soon as it works again. Card payments are the exception: they stay with the provider the card was entered with.

Stripe

With Orchestration: a retry on another processor, based on your rules.4

Contract to sign

Wajub

Your contract with each connected provider. In Cameroon, the Wajub rail collects MTN MoMo and Orange Money with no provider contract.

Stripe

A Stripe account, in a country where Stripe opens accounts.1

Pricing

Wajub

Subscription from 0 to FCFA 29,900 a month, then usage beyond the included volume. Your providers' fees come on top, under your contracts.

Stripe

Per payment, depending on the account's country. In France: 1.5% + €0.25 per standard European card, 3.15% + €0.25 per international card, plus 2% for conversion.3

Test mode

Wajub

Free sandbox, no time limit. Routing between connections runs in production.

Stripe

Yes: sandbox environments.7

Using Wajub alongside Stripe

  1. Integrate the Wajub API: one call creates the payment, your customer picks mobile money or card on the checkout.

  2. In the Dashboard, connect your Stripe account for cards, and your mobile money providers for the rest, or the Wajub rail in Cameroon.

  3. Your card payments still land in your Stripe account, at your Stripe rates.

Choose Stripe if

  • Your business is based in a country where Stripe opens accounts, and your customers mostly pay by card.

  • You need the Stripe ecosystem: subscriptions, invoicing, marketplaces with Connect, on every continent.

  • You route cards between large processors such as Adyen or Worldpay: that is Stripe Orchestration's ground.

Choose Wajub if

  • Your African customers pay with mobile money: MTN MoMo, Orange Money, Wave, M-Pesa and more. Wajub routes 68 local channels in 23 countries.

  • You keep Stripe for cards and add mobile money, with a single integration for both.

  • Your business is in Cameroon: the Wajub rail collects MTN MoMo and Orange Money there with no provider contract.
